-Our Style of Karate-

After Kenwa Mabuni (see Shito- history), Shito-ryu was split into many different sectors and sub-styles as practitioners advanced and split off into their own ways of teaching and created their own styles of Shito-ryu.   Shito-ryu is one of the most prominent styles in the world, it is one of the four major styles along with Goju Ryu, Wado Ryu and Shotokan.

At Jyanguru dojo we teach Hayashi-ha Shito-ryu Karate-do.  Our style is a traditional Japanese classical Karate-do that passes the teachings of Soke Teruo Hayashi. Soke ("Grandmaster") Teruo Hayashi, the founder of Hayashi-ha Shito-ryu Karate was one of the most prominent figures in modern Karate-do. During his lifetime, he studied and adapted many different styles of Okinawan and Japanese Karate. His system of Karate-do was studied worldwide.

-Shito-ryu History-

The style of Shito-ryu was created in 1931 by its founder, Kenwa Mabuni.  Mabuni was a martial artist from Shuri who during his lifetime studied under Anko Itosu and Kanryo Higaonna, the highest representatives of Shuri-te and Naha-te. The style of Shito-ryu was created as a mix Shuri-te's straight, strong and powerful techniques and Naha-te's circular and soft techniques - thus creating a versatile “mixed” style with the ability to handle many different Scenarios. Shito-ryu today has the most comprehensive kata syllabus of any style in the world - including Tomari-te and even kata from smaller styles as well.  Specifically our style, Hayashi-ha Shito-ryu, having the most amount of kata in Shito-ryu.
